The Lovers depicts a man and woman in a lush landscape, reminiscent of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Behind the woman is the Tree of Knowledge, a fruit tree with a serpent representing the temptation of sensual pleasures. Behind the man is the Tree of Life, bearing twelve branches and twelve fruits, suggesting the twelve months of the year or the twelve zodiac signs. The angel who protects the couple from above is Raphael, the archangel of healing. Raphael is also the angel of air, the element associated with Gemini, represented by billowing clouds. Air represents mental activity, such as communication, understanding, and the ability to reason. The mountain in the background indicates the challenges that the couple will face on their journey together — but note that the clouds easily clear it.
