Behind the woman is the Tree of Knowledge, a fruit tree with a serpent representing the temptation of sensual pleasures. Behind the man is the Tree of Life, bearing twelve branches and twelve fruits, suggesting the twelve months of the year or the twelve zodiac signs. The angel who protects the couple from above is Raphael, the archangel of healing. Raphael is also the angel of air, the element associated with Gemini, represented by billowing clouds.
