Planchette Stoneware Ornament

$20.00

Handmade from stoneware clay, these planchette-shaped ornaments feature a moth, symbolic of death and the mysteries of the afterlife, and the expression "As above, so below," which emphasizes the correspondence between various planes of being. The design also features moon phases and seedlings and vines, symbolic of cycles and rebirth, and an eye for enlightenment and protection. Each ornament measures approximately 3 1/4” tall, comes with a faux suede cord for hanging, and arrives in a gift box. The design is stamped into the clay and underglazed for texture and depth and is available as a black design on white clay or as a white design on black clay, fired raw for a velvety matte texture or glazed for a glossy finish.

A planchette (from the French for "little plank") is a small heart-shaped tool used to communicate with spirits. Invented in Paris during the wildly popular spiritualism movement of the Victorian era, the planchette was originally equipped with a pencil so that séance participants could write out messages from the dead. By the 20th century, the planchette had evolved into a pointer accessory for "talking boards", better known to us as ouija boards.

Please note that "black" stoneware clay is not true black but fires to a deep brown, as pictured.
