Susanna Jayne Gravestone Wall Decoration (White)
This stoneware wall decoration features a rubbing from the gravestone of Susannah Jayne (d. 1776) at Old Burial Hill in Marblehead, MA. Carved by Boston artisan Henry Christian Geyer, this gravestone is full of symbolism. At the center is a grim reaper with a laurel crown, holding a sun in one hand and a moon in the other. The skeleton is encircled by an ouroboros, an ancient symbol of a snake eating its own tail. The ouroboros originated in ancient Egypt and represents the everlasting cycle of life and death.
This piece is handmade from white stoneware clay and glazed for a glossy finish. Measuring approximately 8” in diameter, it comes with a faux leather cord for hanging but could also be displayed on a shelf or tabletop using a plate stand.
