The Hanged Man Tarot Card Pint Glass

$35.00

This can-shaped pint glass features an etching of the Hanged Man, the twelfth Major Arcana card in traditional Tarot decks.

The hanged man is suspended from a tau cross made from living wood, while the position of his body forms a fylfot cross, an ancient symbol of the sun in motion. He is hanging upside down from one ankle, and his hands are behind his back, forming an inverted triangle. His position is typical of pittura infamante, a genre of defamatory painting common in Renaissance Italy. Commissioned by the government, these paintings typically depicted traitors, thieves, and those guilty of bankruptcy or public fraud and were displayed in public centers as a form of punishment by humiliation. However, this figure’s facial expression is one of entrancement, not suffering, suggesting that his position is voluntary and that he is hanging there of his own free will, simply to view the world from a different angle. There is a nimbus around his head, symbolizing insight and enlightenment. The tree from which he hangs is thought to be the living world tree, which supports the heavens and is rooted deeply in the underworld.

• Meaning: Circumspection, suspension, pause, surrender, letting go, new perspectives, metamorphosis

• Element: Water

• Ruling planet: Neptune

Each glass is individually sandcarved in our studio, using compressed air and abrasive to actually carve away the glass for a stunning three-dimensional image that you can actually feel with your fingertip (you can read more about the sandcarving process on our “About” page). These glasses are made to last a lifetime, and the sandcarved image is completely permanent and dishwasher safe.

Each glass is handcrafted to order, so please allow 1 to 2 weeks of production time as we create one just for you. Please note that our stencils are designed after antique tarot cards that are more than 100 years old, age marks and printing flaws included. As with all handcrafted items, while our listing photos are a good representation of the design you are ordering, you can expect minor distinctions in the pint glass you receive, making it truly one of a kind.
