Hand-Painted Stoneware Tarot Card Ornament: The Wheel of Fortune

$50.00
Sold Out

This hand-painted stoneware ornament features The Wheel of Fortune, the tenth Major Arcana card in traditional Tarot decks, hand painted in full color on white stoneware clay. Each ornament is fired with either transparent crackle glaze (for a glossy surface) or raw (for a velvety matte texture) and tied with a ribbon for hanging. If you have a preference regarding surface finish or ribbon color, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate if inventory allows. Each ornament measures approximately 2 1/4" wide by 3 3/4" tall. Please note that colors may vary slightly from ornament to ornament, and the item pictured in the listing photo may not be the exact ornament you receive.

At the center of the Wheel of Fortune is a giant wheel, which represents the perpetual motion of the universe. The face of the wheel is inscribed with the letters ROTA, which is Latin for “wheel” and an anagram of TARO, counterchanged with the Hebrew letters YHVH, the unpronounceable name of God. The center wheel is inscribed with the symbols for mercury, sulphur, water, and salt, the base elements of Western alchemy. In the form of a serpent, the Greek god Typhon (the deadliest monster in Greek mythology) descends the left side of the wheel. The Egyptian god Anubis (the god of death) ascends the right side of the wheel. On top of the wheel sits the sphinx, which symbolizes knowledge. The sphinx’s posture suggests stability against movement, while the descent and ascent of Typhon and Anubis suggest spiritual transcendence. The four corners of the image are occupied by the four Living Creatures of Ezekiel: a man, lion, ox, and eagle. Each of these winged creatures also represents one of the four fixed signs of the Zodiac: Aquarius, Leo, Taurus, and Scorpio. They signify fire, water, air and earth and also stand for four basic virtues: to know, to will, to dare, and to be silent. Each holds the Torah, representing wisdom.

• Meaning: Good luck, karma, life cycles, destiny, a turning point, changes, opportunity

• Element: Fire

• Ruling planet: Jupiter
