"Hansel & Gretel" Porcelain Folklore Egg

$95.00

Our Folklore collection of porcelain eggs draws inspiration from Pysanky, a tradition of egg decorating in Ukrainian culture that originated in Pagan times. Handcrafted in fine porcelain and painted in rich cranberry red, each egg showcases a scene from a beloved story alongside traditional Pysanky motifs.

Our “Hansel & Gretel” egg depicts the siblings as they embark on their perilous journey through the forest, leaving a trail of bread crumbs behind them. The intricate design captures their adventure amidst rows of trees, symbolizing longevity, youthfulness, and growth. The alternating tree patterns are rendered to echo the ancient tradition of using leaves or branches to symbolize entire forests in pysanky.

Interwoven with the forest motif are triangles cross-hatched with a net design, known as resheto, dating back to the Paleolithic era. Symbolizing the goddess of the sky, resheto served as a powerful talisman against malevolent spirits. However, the positioning of the triangle designs in the border motif is reminiscent of wolves' teeth, a symbol of malevolence, introducing a dual interpretation and adding an intriguing layer of symbolism to the narrative.

At the top and bottom of the egg, the sun radiates its warm rays, offering two different perspectives of the same celestial body. This juxtaposition evokes the disorienting feeling of being lost in the woods, where every direction appears identical.

Celebrate the timeless themes of survival, resilience, and liberation found in “Hansel & Gretel” with this beautiful porcelain egg. Whether showcased on a mantelpiece, nestled in a decorative bowl, or gifted to a loved one, these eggs serve as captivating conversation starters, inviting you to delve into their intricate symbolism and return to the enchantment and wonder of classic folktales.

Each egg measures approximately 2.5 inches in length.
